Bobby

The world lost a great man today. My grandfather, Forest Max Paul. He was 86 years old. Most obituaries briefly remember the person's life through marriage, career and hobbies. I will not do this here. Instead, I would like to share special stories from each one of his grandchildren in this space. Bobby, you will be missed and always loved.

From Nick Senkovich, Grandson:

(Nick is currently 7,000 miles away in Iraq) I was thinking about Bobby the other day, because some of our quick reaction force vehicles are Chevy Luv trucks that have been refitted as Baja racing vehicles (because of the really bad and treacherous roads we have surrounding the base). Anyway, I was thinking about Bobby’s old yellow Chevy Luv truck and how I referred to it as the "Joe." For a split second that night, as I was driving, I was daydreaming about how Bobby used to give me a ride to Betty's restaurant, in the “Joe”, to have a milkshake. Something I will never forget.

From Andrea Boyaner, Granddaughter:

I can attest, that Bobby thought Education was very important, this included how to hit a golf ball properly. On a lovely spring afternoon, Bobby and Chardie took Nick and I to Pala Mesa Golf Course to hit a bucket of balls on the driving range. This was my first ever attempt holding a golf club, let alone having club meet ball in any fashion. Bobby went to grab two buckets of balls and two clubs, while I studied the gentlemen hitting the balls next to me. It looked easy enough…boy was I wrong! First attempt shanked to the right side hitting a tree branch. Second attempt was classier, smack in the middle of the 18th hole (my first and only hole-in-one). I hit some balls a couple of more times, hitting golf carts, trees and almost giving a duck a concussion. The whole time Bobby patiently stood by giving me instructions in a very calm voice. Sometime, between the 7th and 8th balls hit, I think he had had enough of my golfing skills. He very casually mentioned there was very good ice cream in the club house and mentioned that my grandmother could use some company. He didn’t have to tell me twice. I threw down my club and bolted for the freedom of Chardie and that wonderful ice cream. But that was Bobby. He would never yell and tell you were horrible (I totally was), he just causally changed the subject for the better. I’ll miss that. I hope to one day learn how to actually get the ball down the fareway so when its my turn to head to heaven, we can finally play a great game of golf together.

From Natasha Senkovich, Granddaughter:

Most don’t know this but Bobby was a jokester, one funny memory I have of Bobby is playing this silly card game with him. I would hold a card on my forehead and he would have to guess what the card was. Out of 52 cards, he guessed every single one, every time we played this game. After about the 4th time of playing this game, I finally figured out that my dad was standing behind me and mouthing the correct card to Bobby every time!

From Tami Hamilton, Granddaughter:

As you are all aware, Max did not cook. I’m not even sure he would be able to toast bread, let alone bake cupcakes. But that’s what we did one afternoon, when Chardie left us alone to our own devices. So I suggested that we make cupcakes. Close your eyes and imagine this picture: a 10-year-old-girl, a grandfather with NO baking experience and a lot of messy ingredients that will eventually come together to create a thick, gooey batter. Needless to say we soaked the kitchen in thick brown batter and I mean soaked, from floor to ceiling, including the window and curtains! About 20 minutes went into making the batter and about 2 hours went into cleaning up the mess. When everyone arrived back home we had hot chocolate cupcakes with melted frosting waiting and big, proud smiles on our faces. Little did we know that our mess would be found out in about 3.5 seconds after our proud display of culinary aptitude. We forgot to clean the ceiling.

He is survived by his wife: Charlotte, daughter: Julia, son: Jeff, brother: Richard, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with numbers 6 & 7 on the way.

Photoshop Skillllzzzzz...

Feeling sentimental about Marek's fast-approaching FIRST Birthday, I started going back through thousands and thousands of pictures that we took those first moments after he arrived:

I should probably save those somewhere in cyberspace where I can't get to them. Holy hell. I looked like CRAP.

(Unable to bring myself to actually display photo here. Use your imagination. Think of a fat Elvira with dark circles under her eyes.)

Kept digging around for a semi-decent photo I could Photoshop and found this pic that my cousin took of us in the hospital. I look D-E-A-D in the original pic...but now...I've been brought back to LIFE!!! I had to get rid of bags under eyes, horrible complexion, color, etc...and drum roll please...here's the final result! It's not great but I can at least look at it now without getting the creeps. Seriously, no one thought to sprinkle some makeup on me or give me a mask???? And you call yourselves FAMILY. Marek, of course, looks like a little prince. All cute and perfect.

Godzilla vs Big Bear Lake!

Marek and I decided to take some R & R up in Big Bear Lake this past week at my parents house. As you know from a previous post, Marek is now walking EVERYWHERE. He kinda looks like Godzilla when he walks. You know that look, arms out, not swinging, legs kinda swaying, etc. Plus this kid leaves a wake of destruction or maybe just toys. But at least he's cute doing it. He also learned how to walk sides and turn and go the opposite direction, things we take for granted, this kid is mastering.

Here's some pics of our time in heaven:

We took Marek on a little walk after his bath and my mom kept freaking out that he was cold...so...we covered him blankets. Poor kid got hot (as I knew he would. Runs hot like his Mama) so he peaked his tootsies out from under the blanket.

Here he his. The male version of Mother Teresa.

Marek is registered at Williams-Sonoma for his birthday. He'll take any baking pans, utensils and measuring cups you can find.

He's been posing with this smile lately. It cracks me up!

My Mozart with his Tati.

Again, with the smile. Priceless.

Oh yeah, Godzilla learned how to climb up stairs too.

"Mom, there's a silly Grizzly bear outside the back door."

"Mom! He's still here and he's super SILLY!"

A REAL Grizzly at the Big bear Zoo

Marek pointing out the Coatamundi. He got SO excited when they would wrestle and play with eachother.

I love how close you can get to the animals at this Zoo. Marek was lovin' every minute.

I think we need to teach Gamma the secret to getting Marek to smile for the camera.

We had a great time in Big Bear and can't wait to go back to our favorite Bed & Breakfast, uh, I mean Grandparents house! Thanks for making our trip AWESOME Tati and Gamma!!!

Summer...

Me and my Elephant, aka Daddy!

Walking the pier during the US Open. It was FREEZING that morning.

Watching the ducks at our favorite park.

His ducks.

Wants to play ball so badly with Gabby...but all she wants to do is chase wasps outside.

First cow's milk. Yeah, I'd say he liked it.

Gettin' ready to push...

Away we go!

Trying not to run over toy debris and dog-dogs.

"Son, the fire truck does not fit out the doggie door."

Loves to go on the swings!

Blowing kisses...I think it was actually at a really cute Lab puppy and not at me.

Learning how to NOT hit walls with his train.

He figures it out! Wicked smart little man!

Eating. Eating. And more eating. It boggles my mind how skinny this kid is when he eats soooo much!

Dance. Dance. Dance. Dancing with his Mama.

One of my favorite pictures of Marek and Matt

Walking!

Congrats to my little man for taking his first steps today without holding on to anything! I'm so glad and extremely grateful to my wonderful husband, Matthew, who works his arse off so I can be home with our son. No gift or shiny object will ever compare to this "gift" named Marek and I thank you for that my love.

Ok, mushy feelings aside, MAREK WALKED! MAREK WALKED! He went from the little fireman truck to the highchair and then right towards me who was a few feet away - straight into my arms. Priceless. I wanted to cry. My baby's all grown up. Well not quite grown up, but this just unlocked a whole new world for him...and for me...

Check out the walking master!
